In early 2013, the commercial printers at HONBLUE + Electric Pencil partnered with the nonprofit design organization AIGA Honolulu to build a creative "Inkubator" dedicated to the development of Hawai'i's local graphic design and print community.
At Inkubator, recent design graduates learn about the mechanics of printing and design from industry professionals to help build their stable of knowledge and to help them in their competitive markets. Additionally, these emerging designers in the program get partnered with senior 'mentor' designers from within the community (professionals at local ad agencies, other publications, and teachers, among others), and they collaborate with seasoned writers and photographers to prepare the content for Abstract Magazine.
From 2013 through 2015, Inkubator has collaborated with more than 40 mentors from Hawai‘i and around the world to help educate and guide almost 50 local emerging designers, many of whom have gone on find full or part-time design positions with local companies.
Beginning in early 2016, Inkubator returns as a series of educational workshops and mentorship in collaboration with local design agencies Design Asylum III and Klineworks.
